Project Linus

"Providing security through blankets"

Spun is gathering knitted or crocheted ‘security’ blankets for seriously ill or traumatized children. The idea is to provide a hug and something soft for children to cuddle. The blankets are given ‘for keeps’ to children in various local care facilities and the children take them home when they leave.

It's easy to help Project Linus. Simply make a blanket and donate it. Your blanket will be given to a child in need...

You can help by making a blanket from your own yarn or by donating yarn to help someone else make a blanket. This is a great way to help the community and feel good about using up those odds and ends. All blankets must be new and handmade (knitted, crochet, quilted, sewn, etc.) and machine washable. Check these associated companies for free patterns...  Lion Brand or Wool-tyme.

Your finished blanket can be dropped off at Spun to ensure that your blanket(s) reach the children who need them most.

Project Linus is a 100% volunteer non-profit organization. For more information contact Project Linus Canada.

New and worth checking out

Canada Pride Sweater - 2010 Olympics

We Canadians can't get enough of this hand-knit sweater! Thank goodness Briggs & Little, supplier of the yarn for Team Canada's sweaters, offers their twist on this iconic Cowichan sweater. We carry Country Roving yarn and if you start now someone will be thrilled to get it for Christmas. In Youth and Adult sizes.

Flyer Saucers from Germany

Our friends at Schoppel Wolle have an ingenious answer to a longstanding self-patterning sock yarn problem – how do you make sure that your two socks will actually match. The solution is called Fliegende Untertasse (or "flying saucer"), and it involves winding two strands of sock yarn, side by side, onto a disk. That disk is then injection-dyed with multiple colors to create a self-patterning sock. As you unwind the yarn, knitting both socks simultaneously, they will look exactly the same.

Superwash, dyed-by-hand in a double ply wool yarn for an identical pair of socks!

Our Next Animal Hat !

An adorable giraffe is now available for purchase from our Ravelry store!

Crochet one for the little animal in your life...

New Yarn from Sirdar

Hot on the heels of the wildly successful Baby Bamboo, Sirdar's new yarn Flirt is the "grown up" version...

Made of the same soft blend of 80% bamboo/20% merino, Flirt comes in a more mature palatte, with deep red and purple as well as shimmery silver and gold.  The patterns are designed to enhance the drape of this fabric in their new book.

Bamboo & Pearls by Sublime

This one truly is sublime... super soft bamboo paired with a viscose made from pearls (!!!)  It has shine and softness and drape like you wouldn't believe.

Pair that with the usual beauty of their patterns, and you have all the inspiration you need for your spring knitting!

Spring Yarns from Noro

Jane Ellison has a new kids book out with the patterns you see pictured here.  She has used all of the new spring yarns, as well as the other cotton silk blends such as Taiyo and Chiriment to create soft, beautiful, huggable designs for children.  Yay !!

Aya is a blend of cotton, silk and wool in a DK weight that is perfect for spring knitting, or for those who find their wool a little scratchy...

The colours are gorgeous (of course!) and once I started playing with a ball, I didn't want to put it down!

Sekku is Noro's first laceweight yarn! It is also a blend of cotton, silk and wool, and would make a beautiful shawl or scarf or stole or ... (you get the idea!). With over 400 yards per 50g skein, you won't need too many balls either!

Furin is a fabulous thick & thin component yarn. This yarn's construction gives it great texture & fun: the colorful, auto-striping base strand has wrapped around it a silky thread that periodically shows up with brightly hued slubs. The combination of silk, wool and rayon makes it a great yarn for spring and summer knitting !!

Chirimen and Taiyo

With all the new yarns by Noro, let's not forget about the lovely yarns from the last couple of years.  Jane Ellison has thoughtfully included them in her new kids book as well, so here are a couple of pictures to get your creative knitting juices flowing...

Taiyo is a blend of cotton, silk and wool in a worsted weight, perfect for quick summer knits.

Chirimen is a comparable blend of fibres, in a dk weight.  There are beautiful patterns by both Jane Ellison and Jenny Watson using this lightweight yarn.  We have a lovely sample of a short sleeved sweater in the store that you can look at too!

New Yarn and Book by Elsebeth Lavold

Cool Wool is a lightweight blend of cotton and wool in a dk weight that makes it the perfect yarn for kids sweaters and any spring/summer knitting for you! The colours are bright and the yarn is washable (hooray)!

Elsebeth Lavold's new kids pattern book is both adorable and irreverent with its lacy sweaters for little girls and rhino sweater for boys (or girls...!).

Tattoo Kimono Shrug

Come on into the store and try on this sweater - we promise you won't want to take it off! It flatters every body type with its shaping, and it keeps you warm without being too bulky. The perfect sweater!!

Bonus - this pattern is so popular that we want to wear it all year and we have a summer-weight version available with 3 new "tattoo" designs....
